Horsham has been twinned with Lage since 1985. The original contacts with the town began through the football club at Brighton Road Baptist Church. The sporting links with the town continue and Lage runners are regular participants in the Barns Green half marathon. Horsham has welcomed many school children from Lage during exchange visits over the years.

Lage Coat of Arms
The coat of arms of Lage is based on an image of a farmers plough.

Lage lies about 15 miles south west of Bielefeld, in the north German state of North Rhine Westphalia. With a population of around 35,000 Lage is a little smaller than Horsham. Like Horsham, Lage has a heritage in brick manufacture and there is an industrial museum concentrating on the local brick industry nearby.
The origin of the town can be traced to the church of St John (today the Market Church) which was founded on a hill near the river Werre in the year 900AD.

The town lies within sight of the huge Hermann monument, erected on the top of a neighbouring hill to commemorate the German hero Hermann who inflicted an overwhelming defeat on the Roman general Publius Varus in the Teutoburg Forest, destroying three Roman legions.

Millais and Forest schools exchange visits with Lage Gymnasium (grammar school) first started 28 years ago and have continued ever since. Read more about the visits here.
